Left | Right

I am reprising two poems I wrote and arranged in ‘concrete’ form a while back.

Below are two graphic images I created. The one on the left was designed using a CAD program. The one on the right was drawn freehand with a Wacom tablet.

Both the poems are extremely refined and very well crafted. I loved it, the subject matter is so different, mirroring opposing emotions…brilliant!

You recognized one of the ways these two pieces ‘reverse’ mirror each other. Another is that the poem on the left is rooted, motionless — while the one on the right is in high motion. Still another is the poem on the left is silent, the one on the right is filled with noise. Then there is the physical mirroring of the two printed sides. Also, the poem on the left has its focus below ground, the one on the right is focused above ground.

There are a couple others. We’ll see if anyone can pick them out.

It would have been amazing if you kept them separate yet have one word in the middle to join them together.
You would have had the left poem, the right poem and the left and right poem.

Loved the poems, opposite emotions well separated, is there a reason why you chose a negative version for the left and a positive version for the right? Just wondering.

Interesting you should mention that. I tried for quite some time to create a separate left and right, with a word between each line to also make a combined single poem — but I kept finding that approach left me with weaker individual left and right pieces.

But it is a project I plan to revisit. I had a couple drafts that were promising — but needed considerable editing. Maybe someday…

Congratulations on recognizing another of the ways in which the two poems ‘reverse’ mirror each other. Still another way is that the poem on the left is a single individual while the poem on the right is a large number of people.

No reason why the particular sides were chosen to reflect the positive and negative.
